Hawie
I was born in Lima and come from a family of Lebanese roots. For over 25 years, I have lived and worked between Peru and Germany.

As a German-Peruvian filmmaker, my work combines emotional intensity with narrative precision.

I studied Audiovisual Communication in Lima and trained in directing and screenwriting in Barcelona and Cologne.

Today, I work as a director, screenwriter, and producer, developing international film projects between Europe and Latin America.
I believe in a cinema that emerges from the encounter of cultures, memories, and perspectives.

Martin Hawie is a German-Peruvian filmmaker whose interdisciplinary background shapes the distinct visual identity of his work. After studying Audiovisual Communication in Lima and photography at Centro de la Imagen, he moved to Europe to deepen his cinematic language. He completed a Master’s degree in Directing at a film school in Barcelona, where one of his short films was nominated at the Sitges International Film Festival.

In 2012, he pursued postgraduate studies in directing and screenwriting at the prestigious Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) in Germany. His first feature film, Camille, premiered at the Hof International Film Festival. His following film, Toro, created as his graduation project at KHM, marked a significant milestone: it was first presented in Hof and later screened in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section of the Berlinale.

The Berlin screening was introduced by the legendary German film patron Heinz Badewitz, who was honored by the festival on the same day, making the event particularly meaningful. Hawie was also nominated for the Studio Hamburg Young Talent Award for Best Director. Toro continued its international run at the Guadalajara International Film Festival (Mexico), where it was nominated for the Maguey Award.

Established within the A-list festival circuit, he premiered Future Is a Lonely Place in 2021, a co-production with the German broadcaster ZDF, in the Official Competition of the Shanghai International Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Goblet Award. This feature marked his professional debut following the completion of his postgraduate studies.

In 2025, he founded the production company Zorro Films in Lima, focused on developing international collaborations and co-productions with Germany.

The company’s first project is the feature film Criaturas Frágiles. With this film, Hawie returns to his roots, presenting his first feature shot entirely in Peru and in Spanish, merging his rigorous German academic training with the sensibility of the Latin American landscape.
